I Attended My First Writing Workshop

on

If you have been reading my blog from the beginning, then you know that I have been researching my family history since 2011.  About two years into my family history research I knew that one day I would write a book about my genealogy journey.  I started this blog in 2017 with no formal training in writing to help me get started writing about my journey.  I just wrote about where I research, what I have found, how I research, and just really what’s going on in my head during this journey.  The more and more I write about this journey, the more confident I am in my writing skills.  That confidence is helping me to realize that my writing a book is more than possibility…it’s my reality.

So when I saw that a local library was holding a writing workshop in May, I decided to get further out of my comfort zone and sign up for it.  It’s a four week workshop that will help me plan an engaging story from beginning to end.  This workshop is lead by local author, Brooke Johnson.  The first class was a couple of days ago.  She spent the first twenty minutes or so discussing how most people with great ideas don’t write because they don’t think they can, they don’t think their idea is interesting, or they don’t know where to start.  She talked about how anyone can write a book and that the hardest part is starting the process.  It felt like she was reading my mind.

I tell people all the time that everyone has a story.  And no one can tell your story better than you.  This journey is my story, and I want to be able to tell it the best way I can.  So I’m no longer going to just talk the talk.  I’m going to walk the walk and start writing.

I had no idea when I started this journey that I would be attending a writing workshop.  I have learned during this journey that it’s OK to let somethings happen they way they are meant to.  I still make lists and goals.  But I also just go with the flow too.  Amazing things are happening to me and with this journey.  I am realizing that this journey isn’t just about my research, there are other aspects of it that are just as exciting to me, and writing is one of them.  And this is why my journey continues….

  1. There is one other thing your writing about this journey will do; it will encourage others to the same, if they have an inkling to do so. History is replete with ordinary people who do things outside of their comfort zone. As I said before, I’m waiting to read your story (on my Kindle).

I’m so glad you are enjoying the class and that it is somewhat useful for you, even though the workshop is more fiction oriented. I think it’s great what you are doing! Genealogy is such a fascinating research topic. Best of luck! And see you next week. 😁

  3. That sounds awesome snd you’re right – many say they don’t write and they don’t know what to write! We prove them wrong every time we post a new story. I enjoy writing and writing my own way. It’s fun to tell their stories!

Yes it has been a great workshop. This is the last week. I have some ideas, but I just need to take the time to actually do it. I must admit, I’m still a little intimidated at the thought of writing an actual book. But slow and steady wins the race.
